SAHLA Angels

Welcome to the website of the San Antonio Hotel & Lodging Association.  We've been an active player in our local Hospitality Industry since the early 1930s.  Our mission and goals have never wavered.  We exist to serve our community and our industry by:
  • Serving as the voice of our industry at the local, state and national levels by being proactive on issues and actions which affect the Hospitality Industry.
  • Active engagement in projects and programs that improve the working environment of our businesses and promote initiatives that will encourage employees to continue educational avenues which can result in job advancement.
  • Providing educational incentives for the youth of the community who seek a career in the Hospitality field.
  • Collectively and individually promoting, protecting and preserving those elements in our city that make San Antonio a unique and special place to live and to visit.

Standing
  Committees

SAHLA has four standing committees that can always use new energy and ideas to make them better and more effective.  If you are interested in any of the following, call the office and we will get you into the thick of the action!

  • Governmental Affairs
Right now, this is our most aggressive group.  Hotel and Allied Members work hand in hand to meet and network with members of City Council, County Commissioners and representatives at the State level. We work to have one-on-one relationships so we can use all the help we can get!  Carola Broaddus, owner of San Antonio Visitor's Souvenir Map and SAHLA's Allied Director,  is the chair of this group. She is continously working to get our issues in the forefront of our elected officials.  If you are interested in this constant type of involvement - sign up!  Elections are just around the corner - we need lots of involvement!
  • Education
This is the life-blood of our organization.  It is through the young people in our community that our industry will continue to prosper.  We currently direct the majority of our attention towards St. Philip's College with its three prong Hospitality Program that grows stronger and larger every year.  SAHLA played an important role in the enhancement of the Hotel Management Degree program at SPC.  We need to be there to see that these changes and upgrades work to fulfill the promise of graduates moving into higher management level positions.  Involvement in this committee will put you right in the middle of networking and sharing your experiences and expertise with those who are getting ready to move into the industry.  If you want to play a part in the next generation of Hospitality employees, you belong on this committee.  Michael Sanders, GM Hilton Airport, is the chair of this effort.  Mike is SAHLA's 2nd Vice President representing all hotels that are not located in the Central Business District.
  • Membership
An organization's strength lies in its members.  We are always aggressively looking to add new hotels to our membership and for vendors who provide products and services to those hotels.  We like to have hotel and allied members involved in this effort.  It calls for watchful eyes and ears to learn about new companies coming to San Antonio and older ones who just don't know how dynamic SAHLA's role has become in our industry and in our community.  Jack Broaddus, At-Large Member of the Board and owner of Texas Reservations is the chair of this committee.

  • Fund Raising Activities
SAHLA normally holds two fund raisers a year to cover the monies needed for our annual education objects.  These two events are separately chaired and you can take your pick which one works best for you:

    Golf Events

Chaired by Tony Pitkin, VP of Scott Equipment - Laundry Systems,  our current program calls for a Golf League through the Spring and Summer and a Golf Tournament to be held in the fall.  Participants in this group play a part in signing up golf courses for membership in SAHLA, finding courses to be played during  League play and tying down sponsors and gifts for the Tournament.  These two events have been completed for 2011 and brought in $13,000+ for our educational goals for 2011. You can certainly sign up to join this group and start putting the program together for 2012 season.

    Gala
    /other like fund raiser
SAHLA has held 10 very successful black-tie events which added $15,00-$20,000 to annual our education fund.  Chairs Jean James (owner Capers DMC) and Trisha Frank (Freeman's GM) are looking for new ideas and energy to set a new path for this event in 2012.  Join this group to be a part of a new and innovative event that not only brings our industry together for an evening of fun and fellowship but raisies the funds we need to help educate our youth!

Committee Meeting Schedule: GOVERNMENT

The Government Committee's next meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 1st at 7:30 a.m. at the Home2 Suites Hotel located at 603 Navarro [78205] (corner of Houston/Navarro streets).

Hotel Security Alert System - an email  system implemented to warn hotel personnel of potential criminal situations.

If you are not on our security email list, just send us your email and we will do the rest! (Note: You do not have to be a hotel to be included on our alert list!)

SAHLA's "Security Reference Guide" provides many tips and suggestions for Front Desk personnel in dealing with criminal or uncomfortable situations.  This booklet can be downloaded from this website or obtained in printed form from our office.  This Alert system has been in effect since 2007.  It is approved by the San Antonio Police Department who work very closely with SAHLA on these issues.
